Tesla, the American electric vehicle giant, reported a significant 71% decline in net profit for the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. In response to the disappointing performance, CEO Elon Musk announced his intention to scale back governmental engagements and dedicate greater attention to Tesla’s operations starting next month.

In its earnings release after the close of trading on April 22, Tesla disclosed that its revenue for the January–March period totaled $19.34 billion, with net income amounting to $409 million. These figures reflect year-over-year decreases of 9% and 71%, respectively. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, revenue and net income fell by 25% and 81%.

Tesla defines net income attributable to common stockholders as profit remaining after deducting operational expenses, interest, taxes, and preferred dividends.

The company attributed the weaker performance to its price reduction strategy aimed at stimulating vehicle sales, as well as production interruptions at certain facilities preparing for the revamped Model Y.
However, the global media painted a broader picture. The Wall Street Journal suggested that backlash stemming from Musk’s political activities has adversely impacted Tesla’s brand perception and financial performance. CNBC, citing a survey of 1,000 individuals, reported that 47% of respondents now view Tesla unfavorably.

In what appeared to be a direct acknowledgment of this criticism, Musk emphasized his renewed commitment to Tesla during the earnings call. “The primary work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has largely been completed,” he stated. “Beginning next month, I will be devoting substantially more of my time to Tesla. I remain profoundly optimistic about the company’s future.”
